Jesus Christ asked this question, ” . . . when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). Jesus implied there would be little. In a world that is bent on ungodliness, the threat of nuclear war, new and incurable disease epidemics, and increasing antagonism against those who uphold righteousness, many Christians need all the encouragement and help they can get. This is why these examples of faith and obedience are preserved in God’s Word. The Apostle Paul wrote: “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4). We need to be refreshed and reminded of these examples. We need to bolster our faith in God and His Word.
The intent of this work is for each reader to be rewarded and uplifted by the inspiring examples of God’s servants during the Old Testament period. God preserved these examples in His Word for all times, so that we can truly learn the lessons He intends. To examine the lives of the great prophets, the kings, patriarchs, judges, and governors is to relive the events that occurred in the lives of these men. We can see their tremendous acts of faith, as well as their weaknesses and foibles, for they were human just as we are.
What is the relevancy of all this for our time today? Is there anything we need to know that can help us to live the way these men had? Can we profit by their examples and mistakes? Many are aware of what Jesus and the Apostles did, as recorded in the New Testament, but are not knowledgeable about many of the men in the Old. We will begin with the prophets. The events that occurred in their lives are some of the most dramatic examples of service we find. This work will confine itself to events of the Old Testament period. After the prophets, we will look at the righteous kings, and also some that were not so righteous. Then we will examine the patriarchs, the judges, and finally the governors.
It is our fond hope that this work will truly encourage and inspire Christians in a greater determination to be faithful to God and His Way of Life. This is not easy to accomplish in this present world. May the examples preserved in God’s inspired word lead all sincere Christians to a greater dedication and service in the glorious call He has given.
